Yesterday Was The Time Of Our Lives

Year 2011. 29 posts compared to 56 last year.

It's hard to tell if I've achieved or gotten everything I wanted this year. Mostly because I'm not sure what I have and what I don't. Maybe I'll find out next year.

This would usually be a time of reflection and resolutions but perhaps I have come to terms with myself. I can never keep promises I make to myself and it would only end in pain and suffering. Big words with tremendous meaning which only I know what they represent.

Enough of secrets, what about the me that's open? Well, I've not been through much this year and frankly speaking, the year ended so fast. Looking back, perhaps I have crashed and burned so many times I have lost count. But the lessons I have learned each time a damage is done- priceless.

Truths the heart knows

I imagine this time it would be different. Maybe I would be wrong but if there's one thing that would haunt me, it would be the fact of trust. It seems that at every turning point I have to prove myself, earn someone's trust. It's not easy, it never is and never will be. Which begs the question, why do I even bother?

Perhaps next year I would live differently. But whatever path I choose, expect me to go the exact opposite.

This Ain't Tinseltown

It's like forgetting words to your favorite song

I am rushing through this because I really want to make it in time for it to be considered a Christmas post. Except I didn't think things through so I have no idea what this post is going to be about.

Would it be about my recent head-scratching moment with McDonald's?

Would it be about my recent phone conversation with my best friend who's going to America in January?

Would it be about a recent text message I received from another friend that made me wonder why sometimes life can be pretty unfair?

Would I maybe write about how I spent my week in Kuching only for it to end in a few days time?

Perhaps I could consider writing about how I managed to use a ladder to change the mosquito netting on the kitchen window.

And maybe I won't.

So, have a very merry Christmas and an awesome year ahead!

We Danced On Tabletops

T-minus 5 days and counting

This morning I went to JPN to change my IC and I was prepared to say goodbye to my 12 year-old face and practicing my smile and making sure my hair does not "obscure my eyebrows" as per JPN's regulations.

I didn't have to wait long when my number was called. Before anything, I had to askk the lady behind the counter if renewing it would take long because I wouldn't be able to wait for more than 10 days. Good news! If everything goes well, I can collect it after 2 hours. Now that's how you start the day- with smashing news.

But hey, it's me we're talking about. Things don't just go well with me. My fingerprints were not a match to the ones recorded. Turns out, the officer who did my IC when I was 12 didn't do a good job and if I want to renew my IC now, I would have to wait for up to 4 months to get it done. Thanks a lot, officer, whoever you may be.

So I've decided to wait until I am done with my exams in the 4th semester next year to do it.

Remember I got my license some time ago? Recently I asked my dad if there would ever be a chance that I could drive his car. Notes that might help: the car is new. Less than a year old. His answer? On a straight road..Maybe. So I have 2 terms to fulfill. One is that it has to be a straight road. Another is that I have to seek his approval. That probably means I will never touch the Sentra ever. Doesn't matter. He can continue driving me around, not that I mind :B

On a completely different note, I think ladybugs are adorable.

This Side Of Me

I managed to cut myself while sorting out the new books in the library. Yes, I'm a klutz like that. In fact, sometimes I think my body malfunctions as a human being. Holding my phone above my face on the bed and for some reason, my hand decides to release the phone and smack! into my face.

Speaking of bodily malfunctions, sometimes when I'm eating, my tongue decides to pretend it's food and I chomp down on it. Or when I laugh too hard and run out of breath forcing me to take an unexpected inhalation and tadah! A snort is produced. A brief moment of shock registers on your face and then embarrassment sets in. And life goes on ;]

We go together like peanut butter and jelly. Different yet they work well.

Recently I had a conversation with my sister about cats and listed out reasons why we prefer cats over dogs. One reason is because cats are floppy. Pick a cat up and they're just so floppy :D Dogs on the other hand are quite stiff. The least perfect analogy to explain would be cats are like the cooler side of a pillow :3

Christmas is in 11 days and now I'm slightly excited so I shall grace you with my Christmas list.
1. A tee-shirt that says: When my earphones are in, don't bother trying to talk to me. Or any other quirky shirts.
2. A stuffed dinosaur. Preferably blue. But any colour is fine.
3. Money. If you don't know what to get me, just give me money. That way I can buy another pair of shorts cos you'd either get the size and style wrong, do my hair, more shoes. See, I'm not asking for much. Not asking for a new phone or a better lappy or anything expensive. Just asking for the little things in life that makes me happy. Like money :B

Or better still, we could just hang out ;] I'd like that.

Always One Foot On The Ground

And suddenly Christmas is around the corner and yes I am in the mood. But no, I am not in the mood for buying Christmas presents. As strange as it may be, I have reached the age where presents seem meaningless. Yea it's nice to get things from people but do we really need a reason to buy things for the people we care about?

Or maybe I'm just getting old. And boring.

As I sit and ponder on life's greatest mysteries, I am also staring at the load of underwear my aunt put on the table so it can dry under the fan. Yup, my family's a little weird like that. But that's what makes them mine -cue sappy music-

I have been viciously attacked by mosquitoes recently and I have lovely raised bumps all over. However, I think the ones nearer to my palms are the result of a severe food allergy. I have yet to find a cause but it does look like that time when I randomly was allergic to eggs. And of places chosen by the mosquito, they include my elbow, under my foot and and my thumb. Really mosquito? REALLY? My thumb?! Do you have any idea how hard it is to scratch the underside of your foot? It's pure agony, I tell you.

I cannot believe I am ranting about mosquito bites now. I have officially gone insane. Either that or I have lost my flair for writing good blog posts.

For To Seek A Warmer Sky

The third semester has come and gone and I have never felt so hollow. There was no spark. Not even a flicker. Maybe it's the fact that we've gotten so complacent with everything and that is not a good sign, I think.

As much as I feel sometimes time passes a bit too fast, there are times where I feel it's moving much like a snail's pace. Last week- slow. This week- I wondered where the week went. Anyway, a few days ago, my friends and I thought it would be a great idea to volunteer at a local zoo. Well, things didn't exactly turn out the way we expected it to be but it was an experience I think I'd never forget. And I just had a lightbulb moment. I shall talk about lessons learned that could be applied in real life.

1. Politics.
As much as we don't want to get involved, there's always politics involved in whatever job one may do. If the superior is in a (pardon the language) shitty mood, then he would treat his subordinates in the same way and it's like a domino effect. You know they say don't bring your personal issues to work? Truth be told, you're allowed to do that only if you're the boss. It doesn't matter if your personal life is affecting your mood for the day because you're the boss.

2. Discrimination.
Deny it all you want, there will always be discrimination in the workplace. Best part? People from the peninsula don't really like people from the east. Even better? People from the east are not doing much to quash that stereotype. Oh well, life goes on, doesn't it?

3. Girls get the perks.
Well, that is only if your superior is male and like women. Somehow they are sort of wired to not give women easier jobs. Or if they see a woman struggling (even if they're pretending to struggle), they immediately rush to assist them. I am serious. Although I'm guessing with the current issue of the lack of chivalrous men and sexism, this is not really a big point. But maybe in Malaysia it still is. Not that they respect women much and I'm pretty sure some comments could be viewed as sexual harassment.

I think those are the three most valuable lessons I learned in my short stint working with the animals. So that's all folks (:

Don't You Remember?

In a moment of depression and stress, I took a pair of scissors and gave myself a fringe. Can't say I'm very proud of what I did or my fringe for that matter but hey, if the Pharmacy thing doesn't work out, I always have hairdressing to fall back on (:

Then the circle of your friends will defend the silver lining

Reading an article about jobs people don't really want, one listed caught my eye. A mortician. It's not a particularly hazardous job but they face a question of their mortality every single day. Do they question the afterlife as much as everyone else? How do they deal with mourning family members? How do they feel when they face a child lying there- lifeless. Do they question God and His plans?

I have somehow managed to one again exceed the limit on my broadband. And that it rather embarrassing. Which brings me to my weakness. Like Kyrptonite to Superman, my weakness would be strong and fast internet connection. I don't even know what I do online but there's always something to do. New websites to check out, new videos to watch and when I'm bored, there's always catching up on television shows. Although I'm pretty sure all of this is going to bite me in the arse somewhere along the way. I'll be waiting.

Promise me, you'll leave the light on

And Dreamed Of Paradise

When it rains, it pours

It's been raining a lot these days. The plus side would be we'd get beautiful blue skies in the morning and then it would rain. Oh beautiful, glorious rain. Rain complete with thunder and lightning. If there was no lightning, I would be very tempted to play in the rain. But well, lightning is a very good deterrent.

The study-week routine has kicked in. Sleeping at 3am, waking up at 11am only to continue the vicious cycle until the time when everything boils down to this one moment. Actually it boils down to many moments but for now, this one moment seems like everything. Everything we hope for and ever wish to achieve. Sounds clichéd but the reason for this overused phrase is because it's true.

If this is how it feels to fall

And because jumping from one topic to another is so much fun, let's pretend that I have written the most fantastic post capable winning perhaps the Pulitzer Prize while I go punish myself by sitting in a corner with my calculator and pencil attempting to slay the evil twins- Mathematics and Statistics. Till then.

Even If You Cannot Hear My Voice

Just moments ago..

It's the eve of another one of the many celebrations Malaysians celebrate. Yes, I'm talking about Deepavali. Or some say Diwali. Whatever it may be called, it is customary that the family gets together, eat and play poker.

As the years progressed and everyone's much older now, we find it a little hard to satisfy everyone. Especially in terms of choice of food. One vegetarian, one with seafood allergies and I'm pretty sure one has developed an expensive palate. Hence preparation is rather time consuming to assemble a feast to satisfy everyone.

So recently, my cousins and I were jokingly saying "Let's do something different this year". The plan? Order in pizza for the eve and dim sum for breakfast the next day. Wouldn't that be superfreakingawesome?! Imagine that. An Indian family eating dim sum on Diwali morning. Sounds like an awesome plan, no?

Of course we're not going to do this. But we might do it one day. In the mean time, I'm going to start planning for Christmas since I'm finally celebrating it in Kuching. -EXCITED!-

And You Can't Bear The Thought

That ominous glow. What is it?

This past week has been rather stressful with everything not under control. I've never felt more human than ever before- attempting subjects with the lack of passion and enthusiasm, slogging through every single day just wondering why here?

Quoting Steve Jobs, he said one day we'll be able to look back and finally connect the dots of our past. Dots that never seemed to make any sense until perhaps that day of reflection. That's all what we're looking for right? The big picture?

Maybe we shouldn't always be looking for the big picture. Looking too far ahead, we lose sight of the present. Living for the present day and we fail to plan for the future. What is with this contradicting ideas?

Are you my superhero?

IELTS done and now preparation for MUET. Never would I expect a Malaysian English test would be so hard. It makes no sense. Some practice tests had weird accents and grammatical errors. For example one answer insisted on "pollens" when I felt it was redundant. The would "pollen" is technically plural so to say "pollens" would make it redundant, no? Oh the frustration I felt as it brought me back to my days in primary school where I was powerless to correct the teacher for asking us to write an essay about "My Dreaming House". I'm serious. She insisted we talk about "glasses windows" in our "dreaming house". I wonder what happened to her after I left that school?

I realised I ended every paragraph with a question. Mostly rhetorical but still it counts as a question. Which is why I shall end this one with a question just to keep the rhythm. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

All Of My Hopes

Oh the mental torture we put ourselves through

So, middle of September and I can't help but to think time passes by really fast. And yes, I still feel 17- like I'm still very much dependent on my parents and I possess a level of maturity I consider significantly lower than that of my peers. Oh the joys of being 19. Not.

Recently it has come to my attention that I've spent a considerable amount of time thinking. Yes, I think. Or ponder, brood, analyse, muse. Whatever. I've been thinking how far I've come and how much I've grown. As much as I may feel 17, it's irrefutable that I have grown in many different aspects.

All but one. Weight/size. But that doesn't matter. The main concern is not the physical growth but the mental and spiritual growth.

I don't usually blog and/or talk about religion because I would rather listen to the opinions of others but maybe it's time for me to speak out. To start, I am a Christian. And it's not because I go to church or because my parents are Christians. I mean, standing in a garage doesn't make you a car and neither does going to church make you a Christian. Anyway, my point today is that at one instant I felt like I've lost myself. I go too caught up in the other things that I forgot (to put it frankly) God.

After a while I suddenly wondered where is He when things start to go wrong or when things fell apart. I panicked. There was a sense of internal turmoil in me and it was just unsettling. I would lie in bed every night and wonder where do I stand in His eyes and was I worth it. But the worse was as much as I knew I was far from Him, I refused to go back.

The two voices fought back and forth. Both refusing to give in and the more I felt dejected. I gave up doing things I was brought up to do and I gave up in what I believed in. I knew what I was doing was wrong but yet I chose to solve it my way. I kept telling myself to let God guide my paths but yet I refused to let Him take the reigns.

Maybe it was the constant cry for help from my dry, shriveled soul (dramatic much?) or maybe it was the constant prayer and support by friends and family members that the dam just broke one day. I couldn't take it anymore and that's when I texted my friend telling her about my problem. It didn't matter whether she had a solution or not because by telling her, she helped me accept my weakness and now it's time to move on.

Your grace is enough, more than I need

I'm still learning and I may sometimes stumble and fall (hopefully not too often) but I now know the true meaning of "Let go and let God". I may never immediately relinquish my proverbial reigns of my life but I'm letting go of them slowly but surely.

I Look For You In The Morning

I love swings. That feeling of wind blowing in your face. It's like a time warp

Raya holidays are coming to an end and what have I achieved? Nothing. Well, not exactly. I did manage to spend (pardon the language) a shitload of money shopping with my friends. So now it's time for me to tighten my belt and fast or something. No wait, I can't compromise on food. I can uh, spend less on clothes? Yes, that's what I'll do.

But even with all that spending, I still need to restock my closet. The inventory is kinda dull. And I'm also learning to throw inhibition into the wind (hopefully I do that when I'm supposed to). Which is why I am thinking of dragging daddy dearest to go shopping so I don't have to come up with much cash of my own. Ohoho, revelation!

As I type this out, I smell Nestum just wafting through the air. The strange, sweet smell that reminds me of my childhood. Which brings attention to my most recent Tweet saying "If you're under 15 years old, don't talk to me. I don't like you." Yes, this sums up how much I quite dislike children. Why can't they just stay away from me? See the so-called tough exterior, stoic face- one that does not acknowledge your presence, kids? Yes, it's called the "Stay away from me" face. Oh, and see the earphones plugged in? I don't want to hear you either. Don't bother talking to me".

Then a wild adult appears! Now this is the annoying part. They ask the stupidest question ever. Or as I would sometimes say: Stupid until cannot stupid anymore. They ask (in that stupid baby-voice, I might add) "Why won't you talk to xxxx? You don't friend him/her?" Oh for the love of everything related to dolphins and porpoises! I don't like kids and make them stay away from me. I sit here out of respect. I am not obligated to "make friends" with your offspring.

Whoops, now it's a rant. Probably the most immature rant by a teenage girl who is easily- Ooohh! Shiny :D

Where was I? Oh right,

And We'll Have The Scars To Prove It

Hi, I'm Bond. Ionic bond. Taken, not shared

Sometimes the wars we fight may not be tangible. We're constantly fighting. Fighting to prove ourselves to other people. We always say "I don't need to prove myself to you because I'm independent" (or something similar to that) but do we really mean it? Or are we just bipolar?

Anyway, how am I? Last I checked, I'm still slightly mentally unstable (then again, when have I been sane?) and an insomniac. The later due to awesome internet connection :D Oh Unifi, have I told you how much I love you?

So recently, my sleep patterns have become rather erratic. I can't quite blame this on the internet speed because it has been around for quite some time. I go to bed at 12 but only fall asleep at 2 or 3 in the morning. Which leaves me with roughly 3 hours of sleep if I wake up at 6.30am. But what happens when I can sleep in? I wake up at 12pm. Which means I actually slept for the recommended 6-8 hours daily.

This should keep my up and running for the day right? WRONG. My brain then decides it's time for a nap at 3pm so I give in and retire to my bedroom. Sleep consumes me and before I know it, my alarm rings or my dad calls. OHMAILORD, it's 6pm. Tummy grumbles. Time to go look for food. So I practically roll out of bed to get food. I am such a pig.

Because of this, I have eye bags and dark circles under my eyes. No wait, scratch that. My eye bags have bags. They're eye luggages for crying out loud! I bet I'll be charged for extra baggage handling if I get on a plane. I really have to get back on my sleep schedule.

To kick-start this plan, I shall take a short nap now. Hahaha, who am I kidding? I shall sleep until my dad wakes me up (which would be later in the evening).

Cos I heard It Screaming Out Your Name

The constant reminder that I'm not giving it my all. That nagging voice at the back of my mind that I constantly try to silence. I plug in my earphones and blast out music drowning my thoughts.

Oh the slightly euphoric feeling one gets knowing the fact that I have tests coming up and here I am blogging because I am inspired to do so. When was the last time I felt compelled to blog? Sounds like aliens have taken over my body. If I start asking you to bring me to your leader, it's not me. Maybe you could try appeasing "me" with cake? Preferably something from Secret Recipe ;]

The steady rhythm of my fingernails on the keyboard and Adele's songs is somewhat therapeutic. Well, apart from the fact I burned my tongue on hot soup just now and that I think I have the start of a sore throat, I am in the pink of health :D I think. I'm not sure if you count a mentally unstable person healthy but for the sake of completing this post and prevent future arguments with myself, mental and physical health are two different things.

Speaking of sore throats, if I remember correctly I've fulfilled my sore throat quota for the year and I shouldn't be getting it now. Could it be that my immune system is failing me? Come on phagocytes, macrophages and the rest of the white blood cells. Go do your duty. Defend this body until your dying breath.

The World Will Follow After

I am a big liar. There, I said it. I am a liar.

We had our trial IELTS speaking component a few days ago and after exchanging pleasantries, I sat down. No sooner have I properly adjusted my behind on the chair, she caught me off-guard by asking me this question: So have you had a job before? If yes, what was it?

I was caught like a deer in headlights. I panicked. And I said no. That, apparently, is the biggest mistake one can make during IELTS. We're taught that we can never answer a question with no. And I did just that. //facepalm// I managed to recover in time and started blurting out my reasons why I didn't take up a job after SPM and if I did, my choice of a part-time job.

And guess what I said? I would work in a kindergarten! Why? I DON'T KNOW! And my reason as to why I want to work in a kindergarten because -wait for it- I like children! Oh God, what have I done?

And there I was realising I just lied through my teeth and I had no choice but to continue lying. Going on and on about children and how you're responsible for shaping and molding them. I'm not sure if the lecturer bought the lie, but she was smiling the whole time. It's a good sign, right?

After part 2, the first question she asked for part 3 was "Other than the reality TV show Survivor that you mentioned previously, what other reality TV shows are there on air?" Guess what I answered? "American Idol and -pause- another one which I don't remember the name but I'll just talk about American Idol." EPIC FAIL! It was so embarrassing. -blush-

Oh well, moral of the story is Keep Calm and Continue Lying ;]

Time Together Is Just Never Quite Enough

"Maybe, just maybe."

Nothing for the whole month of July? So, what have I been up to this month?

"I'm still not sure what's going on and I'm a little afraid to find out the answer. Oh well, sometimes ignorance is bliss, isn't it?"

Well, I have been quite busy "assimilating" to life in the third semester. Not that it's any different from the previous two but somehow there's something that I can't put my finger on. Whatever it is, my job is just to go through it right?

So, apart from playing Accidentally in Love- Counting Crows on loop, bitch about the new block and the horrible internet connection in Shah Alam, particularly in Section 18, and currently reading John Grisham's The Broker, I basically have no life.

And now to continue the cycle of not having any life. Can't wait.

If All Life Offers Is Black And Blue

Before the holidays I told myself I am going to take time out in the evenings, go to the park and jog. Or at least do something that would increase my heart rate and eventually strengthen my heart muscles so I don't get out of breath when climbing up the steps in the college library.

When I arrived home, I said I was too tired. I'll start the next week. The next week rolled by and it was Gawai. That's when we go to the village. So not that week then. What about the following week?

Turns out, every evening I would be preoccupied with something else. Helping mum prepare dinner, completing chores just before mum comes home so she doesn't suspect I've been spending too much time on the computer, watching movies and catching up on television shows. The usual.

This afternoon I told myself, after coming back from the movies I will lace up my running shoes and go to that blasted park and run (or at least jog) and try not to get a side-stitch. There. I had all intention and BAM! It started raining. Oh sweet rain. Sweet blessed rain. And my, it poured. Thunder, lightning- the whole works.

Okay, maybe I did cheat a little. I made that promise knowing it would rain in the evening. In fact, it was drizzling a little when I made the promise. So, I guess it doesn't work that way huh?

I may be wrong and I might suddenly wake up in an alternate universe or something, but I don't think I would be able to even attempt to jog this time around. I mean seriously, it rains ever evening. Every single evening. So no jogging for me then?

WRONG! My treacherous brain just reminded me that I can wake up early in the morning and do some laps. Oh brain, you have betrayed me. How could you? Betrayed the very vessel that houses you!

Since it has come to my attention that I could achieve my goal of jogging a little in the morning, then I shall at least attempt it right? That way, if I do fail I can say "Well, at least I tried," and put on my million-dollar smile :D

And now to have a little chat with my brain..

I Paid To See You Frown

This post is best read in a British accent for reasons to be revealed later.

It has been a few days since I'm officially 19 and honestly I don't feel 19. In fact, I still feel 17. Still in living in the sheltered life of high school- not having to deal with the problems that come with the real world.

And speaking of the real world, I find that I am way behind in the checklist for things to do before one turns 20. I think I've only done like a tenth of the things in my mental checklist. Some better left unmentioned. Time to go find a rather willing companion to ride off into the sunset to complete my list :D

During the week after the start if my semester break and before flying to Kuching, I have found the perfect method to pass time- by watching British talk shows. Simple hilarious. My conscience is now speaking to me in a British accent (hence the little reminder on top). Truth is I have always loved the British accent and honestly I find them irresistible (read: sexy). Yes, truth is out. Abigail is not an asexual and is capable of finding things sexy. Other things the author finds hot shall not be revealed here lest it be used as blackmail against the author.

Moving out of the hostel the other day proved to be small challenge for me. As an owner of several pairs of footwear, my dad has banned me from making anymore purchases for footwear in the next semester and the following semesters to come. Which is rather sad as I am very fond of shoe-shopping. Oh well, you know what they say repeatedly in Spamalot: Always look on the bright side of life. And I will. I now set my sights on bags. Or maybe tops. Or heck, I might even develop a sock fetish. But who cares? As long as I'm not buying any more shoes, daddy's happy.

With 2 months in Kuching, I have my sights set on certain goals. Some of which would help me with the little mental list I came up with. Mentally of course. I would not put it in paper. Fall into the wrong hands and it might just destroy my reputation. And yes, I do have a reputation. Good or bad, you decide (: Whoop-de-doo. Now to face certain fears of mine. Oh joy.

Throw Our Hands In The Air

And now for a totally cliched post on Mother's Day.

I understand how hard it is for a woman to raise her children especially in times like these, when both parents are usually working. To make time for both work and spending time with the children is somewhat demanding. I can never seem to grasp the understanding of how a mother of 2 (or maybe more) can juggle responsibilities between a 2 year old toddler and a newborn. My question is how?! How is it possible to care for an attention-seeking, probably babbling, wailing toddler AND a crying newborn having to nurse, care and change regularly because they don't always smell like milk and baby talcum.

Which brings me to my first point. I have made up my mind that IF and WHEN I do decide to get married and have children, well it would not be plural. A child. Singular. 9 months of carrying something growing inside of you, sucking up your nutrients, making you swell up. Hey, it sounds like I'm describing a tumour. And to remove this growing thing, by either normal birth of Cesarean birth, is another Herculean task. To raise that growing and living thing, being entirely responsible for another life. To make sure he or she gets a good education, a roof over his/her head, clothing, food on the table. That's not it. The regular medical check-ups, insurance, baby food.. Have you seen the cost of baby formula?

My friends argue saying my kid would be lonely and lack social skills. Well, not if my sister has her kids and I'd just put my child there. Arrange play-dates with other children. There. Problem solved. He or she shall be very social despite being an only child.

This post is merely to highlight how much I realise our parents put into raising us. It's like an investment with no sight of a return- just full of risk. Kinda like gambling huh? I have no idea how my mum managed my sister and I but I thank God she did well. I mean, look at us. We not screwed up :D

Bev's not that tall actually. I'm bending a little to achieve the almost-same-height look

So mum, I know you won't read this anytime soon but maybe if and when you do come across this, know that Bev would be the one providing lots and lots of grandkids. Not me.

We May Only Have Tonight

To those who still occasionally do drop by hoping to read an update by Yours Truly, sorry.

I've been a bit too preoccupied with work, my thoughts and generally having no life to put into words and into this space. Yes, I have once again lost the flair for writing. Writing anything, in fact. I'm looking at my essays and the ones in high school look worthy of a Pulitzer Prize compared to the nonsense I write in college. On the bright side, apparently my lecturer thinks I have a nice accent ;]

Sad thoughts aside and now for sadder ones, I've come to a halting realisation that I have no life. Which is why I have nothing to write about. Each and every day is a repetition, like running on clockwork. My schedule is the same- day in and day out, sun up and sun down.

The semester is coming to an end and I'd like to end it with a bang. No, not the crash-and-burn-epic-fail bang but with the knowledge that I did my level best this time. And hopefully not repeat the events of last semester.

And what have I learned this time? *epiphany mode*

1. Always make time for yourself.
2. Live, laugh, love.
3. Eat, laugh, share.
[Note that laugh is once again in the list]
4. Don't be afraid to ask.
5. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. [just as long as you don't repeat them]
6. When you don't get it, memorise first. You'll get it. Eventually.
7. You're an A-sian. Not a B-sian or a C-sian. Live up to your continent.
8. Keep your promises.
9. There's a reason why you can't get internet connection on certain days. It's a sign you're supposed to be studying.
10. When you're bored, the bathroom could always use another cleaning.

And now to happier notes, I haz a new fone! [translation: I have a new phone]. I feel like such a tech-geek. After doing some serious browsing and contemplation, and maybe a random outburst here and there, I was convinced to upgrade my dinosaur phone to a Smartphone.

Oh and did I mention a new camera too? Truth be told, I secretly wanted the pink one. My inner girly-girl tried not to throw a tantrum as I heard myself say "Silver's fine."

Annndddddd, I bought a Kindle! Well, it's not mine but oh, the thrill of purchasing it, the adrenaline pumping through my veins, heart pumping, arteries dilating and imaginary angels singing with their heavenly voices as I handed the cold, hard cash in exchange for a nondescript brown box. But it was the contents of the box that mattered.

Not forgetting, the joys of using a credit card. I'm now old enough for a... Wait a minute. Does that mean I'm growing old? Oh shoot!

The Other On My Heart

When I was younger, my sister and I used to compete in everything. Even though I knew I was 4 years older than she is, it always made me feel better than I could do things better than she could. I could run faster, I could write better, I could do harder math problems, I could sleep later. Almost everything. Except draw.

You guessed it, I can't draw to save my life. Well, maybe there was a particular time when all she drew was scribbles and she couldn't colour in the lines but when she grew older, I became jealous.

During the time when all I knew about genetics is "a bit of mummy and a bit of daddy = you", I wondered where she got her creative side. It was annoying that she could not only draw, she could colour and produce different hues, do arts and crafts- practically creating something out of nothing but a piece of paper and some coloured pens.

When she grew much older, she took notes with more colour and little doodles at the side. I hated looking at her notes because it was always nicer and better. The doodles were doodles to her but to me, it was a masterpiece.

There was once when we were slightly younger, I challenged her to a little competition. I thought I could draw better than she did and we started to draw. Armed with a 2B pencil, I started to draw the outline of an elephant- with its trunk majestically raised to the sky, large floppy ears. I was very proud of my drawing. I peeked at my sister sprawled on the floor busy drawing and SHADING a picture of a cat. It didn't look like one of those sketches but it was definitely a cat. With long whiskers, big eyes and a stripped body; there's no mistaking it for anything else but a cat.

Suddenly mum walked into the room. She saw us drawing quietly and peeked at our drawings. "That's a very beautiful cat", she commented at my sister's artwork. I eagerly showed her mine.

"It's a giraffe right?"

I've learned my lesson. There are some things I can do, and some I can't. And that would be drawing.

The Grass Is Greener On The Other Side

Time just seem to whiz past, pandemonium ensues and thus causing havoc.

It seemed like just yesterday I started the week with Ethics and ended the week with laughter and gossiping all through the night. And in a blink if an eye, the week starts again with Ethics. Not that I have anything against is but seriously, do we really need to be tested on utilitarianism, teleology and Aristotle? I like learning about these ideologies but I don't like having to read and memorise certain facts just to regurgitate them out during exams.

Some things don't only require understanding. So what if you understand how the first World War started if you can't remember the date? That just renders the fact you know useless.

Speaking of facts, it really annoys me when people ask or say:

1. Oh, you're from Sarawak? When did you come to Malaysia?
- Oh, I didn't know we're foreigners.

2. So how do you find Malaysia?
- Full of douches like you. *innocent smile*

3. Oh wait, you're born in Penang. So is your mum a Malaysian citizen?
- Well douche, if you paid attention in History class, Sabah and Sarawak made Malaysia happen. If not, you'd still be Malaya.

4. So Sarawak is not as developed like Malaysia, huh?
- Oh for the last time, Sarawak is part of Malaysia and has been for the past 48 years! It's true we don't have the Twin Towers and highways stacked on top of one another but it's every bit as developed as KL. Heck, are you even developed? If you are, then why is Malaysia still called a "developing country"? Note the -ing in develop.

5. Omaigoat, they eat like everything there! Snakes, crocodiles, etc.
- Why do you care so much? They're not hunting you for food. Take a chill pill, will ya?

6. Is the education system there the same as in Malaysia?
- *stares*

7. *Hasty amendment of question* I mean, is the education system there same as in the peninsula?
- It's definitely different. We learn that most people from the peninsula are douches and are an embarrassment to the rest of us Malaysians. So don't you dare call yourself a Malaysian when you don't even know Malaysian history.

I think would be better if Sabah and Sarawak separate from the peninsula. But wait, then where would I belong?

But I'm Okay

After a while, the things you used to do had no appeal anymore. Because of this, I am currently looking for a new hobby.

I used to read a lot. That was [note the was] my ultimate hobby]. The thrill of being plunged into an intricately woven story- doesn't matter if it's a mystery, thriller, romance, fantasy or even science fiction- it just didn't matter. At times, leaving me breathless as the plot takes me places. Places I never knew existed or only in the mind of the author.

How I envy the mind of an author. How he or she managed to come up with something beautiful. Art in words, scrawled on paper, thousands of identical copies sold and yet, everyone receives the same amount of magic in each sentence read.

Maybe I've stopped reading because it doesn't provide as much escape as it did before. It used to transport me to a world of my own, gripped by every word, the thrill of turning the crisp page and listen to the crinkle of the paper, the smell of the book and the gentle weight of the book in my hands, the rush of learning of a new word, a new fact or a new place.

I've lost that joy.

Maybe I've lost that joy because of the stab of guilt I harbor every time I pick up a non-academic related book. Reading has now became a privilege and to not feel guilty after reading it would be pure bliss. To close my eyes after a good book and dream. Just dream of the life of the character in the book. To wonder what the food described tastes like, to ponder about the season, to speculate about the ending. And of course, the best part- swooning over the male character. Although the later depends on the genre.

Maybe I should just spare myself the trouble and just pick up a book. But before I do that, homework beckons. To a person who practically graduated with the highest honors from the Royal Academy of Time Compromisation, homework will be completed before the deadline.

So, homework or books?

I Never Told You

"You know what hurt at that time? The fact that I held my tongue and didn't retort or try blaming other people. The fact that I took the blame and admitted my mistakes. The fact that she dismissed it all for sweet-talk and lies. The fact that the truth was worthless in her eyes and everything I fought so hard to keep came crumbling down in front of me. What hurt was that I fought so hard to respect her decision and not question it. And of all things, I questioned my credibility. I questioned both man and God. I blamed man for not being understanding. Most of all, I blamed God for not preserving me from this kind of hurt."

And It Never Feels Out Of Place

"There is something hypnotic in a tiger [...] She has that quality. She treads so softly that there is no sound, and you won't know she's there at all. But if she doesn't like something, she'll stop and hold your gaze. There's a kind of psychological ballet: who will outstare who? In such cases, you should probably not suddenly turn tail because the scent of fear passes quickly. You must back off slowly, slowly- especially if the tiger has a kill, or if she's a mother with cubs: she makes a step, you make a step- you must not run away. And only when you leave the territory she think is hers, only then can you run."
- The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival, John Vaillant.

The Year of the Tiger and then Rabbit. To make an understatement, that would not be the weirdest transition ever. From a somewhat ferocious and dominant tiger to a docile, fluffy bunny. Is it only me or do you see something wrong with this picture?

Maybe the year 2010 was full of surprises- like a tiger silently stalking, springing out at it's prey. An unpredictable mammal- like a cat. Only more volatile, proportional to it's size.

But I beg to differ. Rabbits can be very unpredictable. Since I have not dealt with tigers before, I shall use cats as an example and multiply the effects by say.... 872901471802328915840135781? Fair enough right?

So, cats are very affectionate. As much as they pretend not to acknowledge your existence, they thrive on your affections. If you ignore them enough, they come to you, hoping to get a belly rub. Cat's love to play. There's just something in their tiny brains that makes them a little inquisitive and go completely berserk. But there's a telltale sign when cats are going to turn mad as a Hatter. They start pawing you and/or things, the whites of their eyes show, they literally jump 3 feet in the air when you scare them and they skid when turning into corners.

If you say rabbits are harmless creatures, you have no idea. Once upon a time, my cousin had 2 rabbits. To cut a long story short, one died. The only surviving one [I don't remember it's name but let's just call it Ricky shall we?] escaped from it's cage but decided to stick around. Now, this is in the village where there's no gates or fences and the land is quite big. As soon as Ricky got his paws on the soft earth, he turned completely insane. Eating every single thing in sight, digging up roots and basically wrecking havoc around the farm. He managed to build up quite an attitude and became the badass of the farm. He started out by chasing the chickens and the ducks and one fine day, decided to stalk human beings. I kid you not when I say he chased my aunt around the farm and managed to bite her ankle. At first we thought it was an isolated incident but no, it went on biting other people. I started to wonder if it developed a taste for human meat.

It wasn't long before my aunt from Sibu [stating the particular area she comes from should give you an indication of her palate] decided to trap the bunny. I don't wish to discuss how she did it, but she did. And guess what? The menace of a bunny became dinner. Oh yeah. Rabbit stew, rabbit meat cooked in bamboo and skewered rabbit meat was on the menu that night. Were we sad Ricky died to fill our bellies? I didn't care. All I knew was that Ricky is no longer a threat and his death gave us life. Well, not really. I mean, if we didn't eat rabbit meat, we'd probably just go mainstream and eat chicken so we won't exactly die.

I can conclude that rabbits are no different than tigers and if rabbits are the size of tigers, they'd probably be just as badass or even more badass than tigers. Don't let that fluffy white exterior fool you. That's what they want you to think.

So in the spirit of Chinese New Year, have a great one! And if you're born in the Year of the Rabbit, do not fret. Remember, you're the ultimate weapon of looking innocent yet well, not.

Maybe This Time

The author is currently updating her blog using Mozilla Firefox in an attempt to make the font size smaller. She does not know if it will work but she says it's worth a shot.

Last night I walked out of my room and into the kitchen. I heard the sound of plastic rustling and I immediately knew it was our 'friendly neighborhood lizard' or more affectionately known as a cicak. As I turned the tap on, I silently prayed that it would just stay in the plastic bag until I leave.

But nooo.. The cicak had to jump out of the bag and onto the kitchen counter. If I were to translate it's thoughts into English, it was probably thinking: Oh, someone's coming. *jumps out of bag* SURPRISE!

This immediately triggered a cascade of reactions from yours truly. "Holy sheep! Oh my goat! *bleep bleep* What the *bleep* are you- Oh *bleep* Good grief *bleep*" I instinctively grabbed anything near me- another plastic bag. I threw it at the flippin reptile and watched the plastic bag flutter to the floor AND THE LIZARD DIDN'T EVEN FLINCH! asahjfklfdhjal!!!

Then without warning, it jumped [yes, I swear it JUMPED] down from the kitchen counter to the floor. Cornered, I grabbed yet another plastic bag [why was there an infinite supply of plastic bags, we'll never know] and threw it at the accursed reptile and once again, watch it flutter in vain and land approximately 2 feet away from the lizard.

Then, as quick as it appeared, it disappeared into the darkness leaving me in the silence of the kitchen with the occasional drip from the faucet. Cicak- 2. Abigail- 0.

Hear Me Say I'll Stand Up For My Friends.

Once again, no, I'm not being emo. It's a part of a song. I really should stop having to explain myself. I mean seriously, dear readers [that is if there's any left. I don't even know who reads this anymore] I think you know me enough to know that I post up song lyrics as title because I'm uncreative and I enjoy making people wonder what is on my playlist.

Anyway, the new constellation has caused chaos to the world as we know it. People are starting to understand why their horoscope didn't really describe them. Others are wondering if they should change their tattoo of their horoscope on their behinds. Some are even faced with a dilemma knowing that their significant other is no longer their "soul mate" after discovering that the two star signs are constantly at war and can never get along, hence contemplating a major break-up. Whatever it is, taking the words of Big Bang Theory's character, Sheldon Cooper, we shouldn't be participating in in the mass cultural delusion that the sun's apparent position relative to arbitrarily define constellations at the time of one's birth somehow affects one's personality.

Moving on, this semester has definitely started with a bang. Results were shocking and it proved that we needed more than just mere studying. Understand, comprehension. Call it whatever you want, memorisation just doesn't cut it. Oh well, now to prepare myself for a possible warning letter from beloved
JPA to my mum.

Next week looks like it will be an awesome week for me. Overlooking the fact that I'm going to be staying back from Monday to Wednesday to complete an assignment for something called Unit 3 and then I'm free from Thursday all the way till Sunday the following week. I'm starting to like my laboratory sessions :D

And now to end with late new year greetings.

To my
lolspeak buddies, ohai!
To my makan buddies, yam cha sometime?
To my shopping buddies, SALES NOW! Can we go?
To my cats, meow.
And to my friendly neighborhood
Spiderman, there's a spider in my room near the curtain. Get rid of it, please?

I Will Survive

I feel that starting the new semester deserves a post. But my brain is currently fried due to information overload regarding Biology.

There's just something about Biology that refuses to click with me. I may read the same thing week after week and it refuses to stay put in my cerebrum. Maybe it's defective? -shifty eyes- But then how come I can remember useless facts?

To start the new semester, the seasonal flu decided to take it's best shot at me. With a tissue stuffed up my nose, I look like a mutant. At first it started with the usual sneezing, then the sore throat. After a while, I realise my lymph node in the neck area was slightly swollen and tender to touch. I said to myself cheerily: Now this is how you start school! With a tissue being the finishing touches to whatever look I'm going for.

School is starting in about 3 hours and 30 minutes.

*shouts* Hey Life, give me your best shot!

Oh dang, I forgot. Results are out today.. Shouldn't have spoken too soon.
